**INSTALLATION

To install the latest version of Ocean Data View on a Windows 9x,
Windows NT or Windows 2000 system perform the following steps:

(a) Copy or download (using binary ftp) files "odv5.3_base_w32.zip"
    and "pkunzip.exe" from the ODV distribution directory
    ftp://ftp.awi-bremerhaven.de/pub/GPH/ODVwin32/OdvMedia to an empty
    directory on your system (temp-directory);

(b) Unzip the file "odv5.3_base_w32.zip", for instance, by typing
    "pkunzip odv5.3_base_w32.zip". Alternatively, you can open
    "odv5.3_base_w32.zip" with WinZip and simply press the "Install"
    button to start the installation procedure. In this case you can
    skip steps (c) and (d).

(c) start the setup procedure by double-clicking on "setup.exe" and
    follow the instructions.

(d) delete all the files from the temp-directory after successful
    installation.

To install Ocean Data View from diskettes, download the contents of
subdirectories disk1, disk2, disk3 and disk4 to four diskettes. Insert
diskette 1 into your computer and double-click on "setup.exe". Insert
the other diskettes when prompted for by the setup program.

Note that there are high resolution coastline/bathymetry files and
ready-to-use data collections available for ODV as optional
packages. See file readmeOptPackWIN32.txt for an overview over
available packages and on how to install them.

**UNINSTALL

To uninstall ODV, invoke the Control Panel (Systemsteuerung) by
selecting Settings->Control Panel (Einstellungen->Systemsteuerung)
from the Windows Start menu. Double-click on Add/Remove Programs
(Software), select "Ocean Data View" and press the Remove
(Hinzufuegen/Entfernen) button. Note that this process only removes
files and registry entries installed during the ODV setup. Optional
packages or private data collections added later are not uninstalled
automatically and must be uninstalled separately or removed manually.

**USAGE

To run ODV on an existing collection, do one of the following:

 - double-click on the "Ocean Data View" icon on the desktop .. or
 - choose "Ocean Data View" from the Programme menu of the Windows
   "Start"-Button   .. or
 - double-click on the *.var file of the collection that you want to use.

Note that you can run multiple instances of ODV simultaneously, even
using the same collection.

If you have data in one of ODV's import formats (see ODV help file)
you can simply drag-and-drop this data file on the "Ocean Data View"
desktop icon. In this case, ODV will create a new collection in the
directory of the data file, will import the data from the file and
then open the collection for exploration and analysis.

You invoke ODV's functionality through the main menu (just below the
ODV title-bar) or via popup menus that you activate by clicking the
right mouse button. Note that you get different popup menus depending
on the mouse position at the time of the click. You select stations
or samples by simply clicking on them with the left mouse button.

You plot property/property plots of one or more stations by
double-clicking on the respective stations. You plot scatter-plots,
sections and surfaces by switching to SCATTER, SECTION or SURFACE mode
and double-clicking on the station map. Note that a section or
iso-surface variables have to be defined for a plot to appear. Produce
hardcopies of your plots using the Print or Save As options
(PostScript, GIF).

For further information see the ODV help file that can be invoked via
ODV's Help Topic option or by pressing F1.
