Release 5.3 Feb/20/2001:

ENHANCEMENTS:

-- In ODV spreadsheet files the label of quality flag columns can now
have the form "QF:*", where * represents an arbitrary character
sequence. The old form "QF" is still supported.

-- .o4x files now support 5 digit # of level values in columns 85:89
   (max #: 20,000).

-- In section plots the section topography is now also drawn if
derived variables Pressure(Depth) or Depth(Press) are used on the
   Y-axis.

BUG FIXES:

-- In version 5.2 derived variables that depended on other derived
variables were not displayed in the data windows. This has been
   corrected.

-- Problem with erroneous occasional black areas in ODV GIF pictures
   corrected.

-- Occasional problem with "disappearing" axis labels and text
   annotations corrected.

Release 5.2 Dec/13/2000:

ENHANCEMENTS:

-- Neutral density (Jackett&McDougall) now available as derived
variable (requires "gamma_n" optional package). Among many other
things, you can now display property distributions on neutral
density surfaces. Note that calculation of neutral density is
relatively expensive and you should deletete this derived variable
   when no longer needed.

-- Maximum allowable number of data values per station has been
doubled. A station/sequence can now have up to 100,000 values from
   up to 20,000 levels.

-- New gazetteer of river names.

BUG FIXES:

-- Bug for axis labels in .emf output corrected.

-- Bug for derived variable "Vertical Integral" corrected.

-- Orientation of "Section Coordinate" now follows definition of
   section spine.

-- Line-width display option in STATION windows now works correctly.

-- Property sheets now work correctly even on Windows 95/NT systems
without Internet Explorer 4 (or later).

-- Collection info-line on "Print" output can now be switched off
   (Configuration->General Settings->Print).

-- Bug (SOLARIS only) that resulted in failure to spawn processes
corrected. This resolves problems invoking the Macro and Palette
editors, and also the unzipping programs needed for some data
import routes. All these cases should work correctly now.

Release 5.1 Sep/21/2000:

-- Popup window "Collection variables" (pops up when you rest the
mouse over the collection name in the ODV window title bar) now
provides data availability information for 3 station sets: (1) all
stations shown in the map, (2) current cruise, and (3) current
   station.

-- New popup window "Current values" (pops up when you rest the mouse
over the first few characters in the text window data lines (lines
2 and 3)) shows data values and quality flags for all variables at
   current level.

-- Option Utilities->Find Outliers now lets you flag the outliers as
"Questionable" or "Bad" or lets you delete the values. These
actions can be applied automatically (ODV visits the outliers,
performs the action and writes the modified data back to disk) or
   one-by-one under user control.

-- Properties of existing contour lines can now be changed easily. Use
the "Display Options" option of respective window, press
"Properties" button and select the respective line in the "Already
Defined" list. Adjust the properties in the "New" area and press
   "Add" to implement the changes.

-- New derived variable "2nd Vertical derivative" of any quantity.

-- Error on Solaris platform when using the "Action" menu options fixed.

-- Occasional WOD98 import problems fixed.

-- Problems when calculating isosurface variables and some derived
quantities for shallow profiles (max depth<100m, e.g. profiles in
   shelf areas) corrected.

Release 5.0 June/05/2000:

-- Starting with version 5.0, ODV is available for SUN Solaris
workstations, in addition to the usual WIN32 ODV for Windows
PCs. Except for minor differences, the UNIX and WIN32 versions
offer the same functionality and are derived from the same
source. See readmeWIN32.txt and readme_ODV_install for instructions
on how to install ODV on the respective systems.

-- This is a major new ODV release that should not be installed over a
previous (Windows) ODV version. Uninstall any existing ODV version
before installing ODV5.0 (see readmeWIN32.txt for uninstall
   instructions).

-- If you use coastline/topography from optional packages, you must
download and re-install the new version of these files after
installing ODV5.0. Do not copy coastline/topography files from
previous releases to 5.0. Note that the installation procedure for
optional packages has been changed and simplified (see
   readmeOptPackWIN32.txt and readme_ODV_OptPack for instructions).

-- Land elevation data as well as rivers, sea-ice extent and national
borders are now provided in optional packages
   "odvOP_coastGlobHR_w32.zip", "odvOP_coastRegional_w32.zip",
   "odvOP_coastGlobHR_solaris.tar.Z", and
"odvOP_coastRegional_solaris.tar.Z" for file sets GlobHR, MeditHR,
Baltic, etc. The additional features can be activated and included
in the ODV maps using the generalized map "Display Options" dialog.

-- WOCE CTD and UOT data may now be subsampled during import. Vertical
sample spacing may be constant or a linear function of depth and
can be set by the user. Import of all data is still possible.

-- As a new station selection criteria, you can now specify a
polygonal sub-domain of the map (press "Polygon" button on "Domain"
tab of "Selection Criteria" property sheet and then enter the
polygon vertices with the mouse. polygon is closed
automatically). Only stations from within the polygon are
   considered valid.

-- ODV color palettes now contain definitions for 16 more colors used
for map overlays. If you have defined your own palettes you have to
extend them, e.g., by copying the block of the last 16 colors from
odv.pal to the end of your private palette.

-- ODV now imports the .jos spreadsheet format of Java OceanAtlas. The
.oas format of Power OceanAtlas is no longer supported.

-- Error for graphics objects Rectangle and Ellipse corrected.

-- Most derived variables are now calculated even if a station has a
large data gap between deepest observation and the bottom.

-- PostScript bounding box information more accurate.

-- Many small changes.

Release 4.0.15 (revision 3) May/07/2000:

-- Map problems for non-default projections fixed.

Release 4.0.15 (revision 2) May/03/2000:

-- Iso-surface value calculation problems fixed.

-- Problems identifying map window in layout mode fixed. Accurate map
   identification in SURFACE mode.

Release 4.0.15 (revision 1) Mar/31/2000:

-- PostScript error for STATION plots fixed.

Release 4.0.15 Feb/25/2000:

-- New map projection "Orthographic (General)" allows arbitrary
definition of projection pole (see Orthographic.gif for an
example). If you have installed the high resolution bathymetry
package GlobHR.zip, you should download and install the latest
   version before using "Orthographic (General)".

-- New import option "Update Data (selected variables)" in addition to
previous "Add/Replace Station Data" and "Merge Data (selected
variables)" options (for details, see help file under "import
   options").

-- New "Undo last Change" option lets you undo previous changes of the
setup and graphics display (invoke the background popup menu and
choose "Undo last Change" or simply press Ctrl-u).

-- Error for import conversion "General Linear Transformation"
   corrected.

-- Problems with section topography when printing from Windows 95 and
   98 systems corrected.

-- Color bars can now be switched on/off using the Display Options.

-- Graphics objects can be exported to and imported from ASCII
files. New "allow dragging" property lets you enable/disable
   dragging for any individual object.

-- New gazetteer of largest cities of the world
   (Cities_WorldLargest.gzt).

-- Many small changes and bug fixes.

Release 4.0.14 Dec/07/1999:

-- ODV now lets you choose the font used for annotations and axis
labels (option Configuration->General Settings). Also, you can now
specify a font-scaling factor if you prefer larger (or smaller)
   than default text.

-- Drawing of the map color-bar can be switched on/off in all ODV
   modes. Additional coastline/topography drawing option
"FILL_AND_LINES" fills and outlines a given bathymetry contour.

-- ODV macros now support sine and cosine (arguments in radians).

-- Bug in WOD98 standard-depth data import routine corrected (standard
depth 1100m was set to 11,000m).

Release 4.0.13 Nov/15/99:

GRAPHICS:
-- In addition to annotations, you can now add a variety of other
graphics objects to the plots, thus allowing the creation of
publication-ready figures with ODV. To add graphics objects
((poly)lines, polygons, rectangles, symbol sets and legends) to the
data plots and the map use option: Extras->Add Graphics
Objects->.... As with annotations, graphics objects can be created,
edited or deleted at any time and they can be easily dragged to
different locations (see topic "Graphics Objects" under
"Miscellaneous" in the ODV help file for further information and
the sample GIF file in the attachments for a graphics object
   example).

-- ODV now uses much less graphics system resources. This allows to
run many instances of ODV simultaneously and makes occasional font
and color problems under Windows 95 and 98 much less likely. Note
that Windows NT systems never had these limitations.

-- Default color palette odv.pal changed (if you prefer the previous
one use: odv4012.pal). Default color of continents in maps changed
to dark gray (you can use PalEdt to define any color of choice).

IMPORT:
-- ODV now also imports data from WOCE Upper Ocean Thermal (UOT) data
   files (MEDS format).

-- WOA94 and WOD98 import options now honor sample selection criteria
specified for the import. If, for instance, only values in a given
depth- (temperature-, salinity-, etc.) range are requested, only
data from these ranges will be imported from the data files.

-- WOCE import improved; now accepts a wider variety of station
summary files. File selection simplified and adapted to file naming
   conventions of latest WHP data release (Version 1.5 CD-ROM;
   Sep/99).

EXPORT:
-- Export to spreadsheet and ODV list files now honors sample
selection criteria. If, for instance, only values in a given depth-
(temperature-, salinity-, etc.) range are accepted, then only data
from these ranges will be written to the export files.

-- Many other small changes and corrections.

Release 4.0.12 Sep/01/99:

INSTALLATION:
-- New install procedure uses a sub-directory of "Program Files"
(Programme) as default ODV root install directory (you can choose
any other directory). ODV directory structure changed.

IMPORTANT: If you upgrade from previous ODV versions you should
uninstall the old version before you install 4.0.12. If you have
installed optional coastline packages with your old ODV version, or
if you have added private palette- or macro files, you can move
these files to the new ODV directories after you have installed
version 4.0.12. See topic "Directory Structure" in the ODV help for
a description of the new directory structure.

IMPORT:
-- ODV now also imports data from Power OceanAtlas or Java OceanAtlas
   spreadsheet data files.

-- Samples with missing first variable (usually Depth) are now
   accepted when importing data.

-- When importing WOCE CTD files, extension of CTD files can be set by
   the user.

EXPORT:

-- When exporting X/Y/Z data using either "Export->Export Plot Values"
or "Extras->Clipboard Copy" you can now choose whether points with
missing z-value are included in the output or not.

GRAPHICS:

-- You can now produce PostScript, GIF, and EMF graphics output of
individual data plots and the map (for PostScript, the figures can
be automatically scaled to fit the page; Landscape and Portrait
orientations supported). Use "Extras->Save Single As" from the
popup menu of the respective window (shortcut: press Ctrl+S while
the mouse is over the window; pressing Ctrl+S with the mouse over
the background saves the whole ODV screen (same as "Save As"
   option)).

OTHER:
-- New gazetteer of WOCE WHP Sections. GazetteerGEBCO improved.

-- Data plot and map popup menus re-arranged: the "Full Range (All)"
option is now available from the background popup menu (shortcut:
press Ctrl+F when the mouse is over the background area; when the
mouse is over a data plot or the map, pressing Ctrl+F will affect
only that window). New category "Extras" with some previously
   available and some new options.

-- The popup menu of the map or any data plot can now also be
activated through Configuration->Properties of the main menu. Use
this procedure for windows obstructed by others (needed when
displaying the distribution of one property and overlaying
contour-lines of another property; see new Help chapter "Tips and
   Tricks") .

-- ODV correctly remembers last configuration used, even for
collection directories copied or moved to CD-ROM or other
   destinations.

-- New derived variables "Freezing Temperature" and "Specific Heat".

-- Moving (and resting) the mouse over the collection name in the
window title-bar produces a popup window with the list of
   collection variables.

-- The "Extras->Statistics" option now also shows minimum/maximum and
   X/Y regression information.

-- ODV text control sequences (e.g., ~^, ~_, etc) in variable labels
are now honored in variables popup windows (produced by moving (and
resting) the mouse over variables in data lines 2 and 3 in the text
   window).

-- Problem with "Sort and Condense" option solved. In previous
versions you could loose data marked "bad" or "questionable" if the
sample selection criteria were restrictive (e.g.: allowing only
"good" data or requiring validate variables).

Release 4.0.11 Jun/28/99:

-- Partial pressure of CFC-11, CFC-12, CFC-10, CFC-113, and CH4 as new
   derived variables (pCFC-11, pCFC-12, pCFC-10, pCFC-113, and pCH4).

-- ODV now remembers variables identified during definition of derived
variables. If those variables are needed again, the cached
information is used and the user will not be prompted for
   identification again.

-- In SURFACE mode, if you are plotting properties on depth levels, an
appropriate bathymetry overlay is now drawn automatically (using
   color 7).

-- Difference from Reference variables now use unmodified reference
values instead of gridded values at data locations that are
identical for the two realizations. This assures a true ZERO field
in case the current and reference values are the same.

-- In addition to PostScript and GIF, you can now export the graphics
screen in "enhanced meta file" format (.emf). Use it instead of GIF
output if the plot windows use different palettes (>256 colors) and
if you want to scale the image without loosing information.

-- Distance along sections is now based on station positions projected
onto the section spine. Section topography in PostScript files is
now correct for all section orientations.

-- When writing PostScript output you can now choose to exclude the
   map and the ID string.

-- You can now delete (and redefine) subsets of already defined contur
lines (selected using standard Windows procedures), and you are no
longer forced to delete all lines if you want to modify just some.

-- The data of a given plot window can now be copied to the clipboard
(option "Clipboard Copy" of data-plot popup menu) to be used by
   other applications.

-- The ODV spreadsheet export/import procedures now handle situations
with multiple stations sharing the same cruise- and station-labels
   properly.

-- New high-resolution bathymetry and coastline files for Bay of
Biscay (optional package: BayOfBiscay.zip). Bathymetry conturs
3500m and 4500m in GlobLR corrected.

-- New PalEdt.exe simplyfies creation/modification of color palettes
due to use of NURBS curves for RGB color components instead of
polynomials. Dragging control-points for the RGB color components
now is fully animated. Changes are local and far away colors are
   unaffected.

-- New color palette files: BlackWhiteLight, Bright0, Bright1,
   Bright2, Pastel1, Pastel2. Previously existing palette files
   changed slightly.

Release 4.0.10 May/17/99:

-- Version 4.0.9 problems on Windows 9x corrected.

-- Sort and Condense option now sorts the stations for a given cruise
according to station numbers (still no intra-cruise sorting for
station labels including letters or text).

-- Simplified procedures for changing topography settings of the MAP
window: the Directory combo-box now contains the list of available
coast/topography directories in the directory tree starting at the
ODV default Coast directory (normally: \Odv40\Coast). You select a
directory by simply selecting it with a mouse click (note that the
Available list is updated automatically). In the Selected and
Available list-boxes you can now select multiple items using
standard techniques (left-mouse clicks with Shift or Ctrl keys).

-- When adding contur-lines (Display Options->Properties) for a data
plot, existing definitions for a given line are overwritten by the
new settings. The creation of multiple entries for the same line
   is avoided.

-- Palette editor PalEdt.exe can now be invoked from ODV
   (Utilities->Invoke Palette Editor). Palette WhiteBlack.pal
modified; new palette BlackWhiteLight.pal added. Use these palettes
for black and white graphics output.

-- New option "Redraw" of data plot popup menu forces a redraw of the
respective plot window (shortcut: press 'r' while the mouse is over
   the respective plot).

-- "Depth->Pressure" conversion added to list of possible data
   conversions during import.

Release 4.0.9 April/22/99:

-- ODV collections are no longer required to have Depth, Temp and Sal
as first 3 variables. However, the first variable of a collection
is still used for ordering the observations of a station. When
importing data, samples that have no value for the first collection
variable are still excluded. When defining derived variables that
need Depth, Temp and Sal as input, you are now asked to identify
these variables. Note that internal changes had to be made for
derived variables "Vertical Derivative" and "Vertical Integral". If
you have defined these variables with previous ODV versions, you
should delete and then redefine them with ODV4.0.9.

-- The number of stations in a section can now be very large (# is
   only limited by available memory).

-- In X/Y(/Z) scatter plots (SCATTER and SECTION modes) data of
current station are now highlighted by red line (as before,
current sample is indicated by red cross-hair).

-- WOD98 unzipping now also works for long path- and filenames
   (relevant for non-standard ODV installations).

-- New derived variables: (1) Depth [m] (as function of Pressure [db])
and (2) methane degree-of-saturation (prepared but not fully
   implemented yet).

-- Size of contur-line labels and color of isopycnals in Sal/Theta
plots can now be set by the user.

-- New option Utilities->Find Outliers for finding bad data values.

-- More reliable estimation of iso-surface values.

-- New macro editor (MacrEdt.exe in the ODV binaries directory)
facilitates creation and modification of ODV macro
files. MacrEdt.exe is a stand-alone program that can be invoked
   from ODV (Utilities->Invoke Macro Editor).

Release 4.0.8 March/4/99:

-- More than 2000 new stations added to the WoceBtl collection
(available as optional package WoceBtl.zip; now contains 9335
   stations).

-- In addition to Zoom and ZZoom, the axis ranges of any plot window
can now also be set manually (new option: Set Ranges of plot popup
menu). Note that if you use the Set Ranges option to change
properties of a given window, only this window will be affected. If
you change ranges of a variable (e.g., by using Variables Settings)
all windows that use this variable are updated and will use the
   modified ranges.

-- PostScript files can now be stored in Portrait and Landscape
orientation. If you save in Portrait mode, you can include ODV
PostScript plots in Latex, Word, PageMaker and other page-design
documents (see sample files in \Odv40\Samples).

-- "Gazetteer" option modified and extended. Using the new
Gazetteer->Settings option, you can choose between different
gazetteer databases. Oceanic feature subsets can be created by
specifying names and/or feature types. Format of gazetteer files
changed to allow multi-point feature definition.

-- ODV now uses color 31 for the background of plot windows. By
default, this is a very light gray. If you prefer a different
background color, you should use PalEdt.exe (in the ODV binaries
directory) to change the red/green/blue settings of color 31 in the
palette used by the respective window (default palette: odv.pal).

-- When importing from World Ocean Database 98 (WOD98), the cruise
label now contains the NODC country-code and NODC/OCL cruise
   number.

Release 4.0.7 February/1/99:

-- New "Gazetteer" option in the map popup menu. Selecting this option
switches the gazetteer feature on. A list of undersea features
(prepared by the US Defense Mapping Agency) is loaded, and the
feature positions are marked in the map (red x). Moving the mouse
close to such a point invokes a popup window displaying the name of
the feature. Selecting the "Gazetteer" option again switches the
option off, thereby removing the marks from the map. Note that the
list of features can be edited and extended. See the ODV help file
   for more information.

-- Size of ODV GIF images (produced using the "Save As" option) now
depends on graphics layout. Blank borders are not included and
files only contain the interesting part of the screen within the
   graphics bounding box.

-- Skewed GIF and PostScript bugs corrected.

-- High-color icon, new ODV logo.

Release 4.0.6 January/8/99:

-- In addition to all previous display/plotting modes, you can now
draw/print the actual numeric data values of z-variables at the
sampling positions (for all windows with a z-variable). To do this,
simply choose "Original Data", check the "Numbers" box and set the
appropriate (font) size in the "Display Options" dialog of the
window that you want to modify.

-- New display options for the station-map let you choose color of
station dots and allows coastline/topography conturs instead of the
default filled outlines. Instead of zooming into the map you can
now set the map domain manually using the new "Domain" tab. Now, a
"nice" map frame is drawn/printed when using the default
   projection.

-- Many new bathymetry lines in the GlobHR topography (optional) package.

-- For the "Ratio" derived variable you can now specify a size-limit
on the denominator variable (default limit is zero). If the
absolute value of the denominator is smaller than (or equal to) the
specified limit, the ratio is not calculated and the missing value
   indicator is inserted instead.

-- New option Configuration->General Settings that lets you adjust
general ODV session parameters (e.g., criteria for considering
coverage of a specific variable at a given station good). Note that
changes that you make using Configuration->General Settings are
valid for the current ODV session only. Values are not saved and at
startup ODV always uses default settings.

-- When exporting collection data to .o3x, .o4x or ODV spreadsheet
files you can now also include the derived variables in the output
file. Note that by default only the basic variables are preselected.
You have to select any derived variable manually.

-- New configuration file format allows sharing configuration files
   among different data collections.

-- Placing the mouse over the right-most pane of the status bar now
invokes a popup window showing full names of current configuration
and section files (if in SECTION mode). Clicking the right mouse
button while over this pane invokes a popup menu allowing change of
   ODV's major mode or configuration.

-- Bug in the "Statistics" option corrected.

Release 4.0.5 November/6/98:

-- Configuration and section files may now be saved to (and can be
loaded from) any directory. This is particularly useful if you keep
your data collection on CD-ROM but want to modify, save and reuse
   configurations and section files.

-- CFC-10 and CFC-113 saturation as new derived variables.

-- Import from ODV spreadsheet files now checks date.

-- Direction of section coordinate (distance, longitude or latitude)
now follows defined section orientation in all cases.

-- Zoom functions (window or color-bar) now allow cursor movements
   beyond ODV window.

-- New option Utilities->Find Redundant Stations for identification of
stations with identical or nearly identical position/time stamp.

-- New option Actions->Delete Current Station to delete current
   station from collection.

-- New optional packages: high-resolution bathymetry and coastlines
for Baltic Sea (Baltic.zip) and Mediterranean/Black Sea (MeditHR.zip).

Release 4.0.4 September/10/98:

-- Geostrophic velocity option: algorithm for extrapolating the
shallow station to depth of deep station improved. cross section
   areas corrected.

-- Window geometry templates provided for simplified layout generation
   (Configuration->Use Template).

-- Inventory table updated only once after multiple-file WOA94 and
WOD98 data import (accelarates multiple-file import considerably).

-- Bug fixes in WOA94 and WOD98 import routines.

-- Bug fix for macro files using "exp" or "log".

-- Many cosmetic changes.

Release 4.0.3 August/12/98:

-- Gridded fields now allow much higher resolution due to significant
increase of X and Y grid points and due to possibility to specify
smaller averaging length scales (now specified in permille of respective
   axis range).

-- Difference Fields now also in SURFACE mode (iso-surfaces).

-- New derived variables pH, pCO2, CO2, HCO3- and CO3-- as functions
   of TCO2 and total alkalinity.

-- Auto-scroll feature during plotting in case ODV window is not full
   screen.

-- Section band width (now specified in km) scales with map window size.

Release 4.0.2 July/23/98:

-- By saving reference datasets (see help-file topic: Define Reference
Datasets) and defining difference variables (see: Difference
Fields) you can now plot and investigate property difference fields
   (temporal or spatial).

-- In SECTION mode, ODV may be used to calculate geostrophic
velocities and station-pair data. The results are written to
separate ODV collections and can be analyzed and visualized using
standard ODV procedures (see: Geostrophic Velocity Sections) .

-- ODV map may be located partly or wholly within another plot-window.
Use this feature for small maps over topography (section plots) or
   continents (iso-surface distributions).

-- Axis labels now implemented as "annotations": they can be dragged
with the mouse, resized, edited and deleted.

-- PostScript bounding box error fixed.

Release 4.0.1 June/26/98:

-- Any window with a z-variable can be drawn as gridded field (color
shading and/or conturing). Previously, this was only possible for
   along-section plots and iso-surface maps.

-- In addition to the original data values, "Export Plot Values"
option now also exports the gridded fields to ASCII file for
   further processing.

-- WOCE CTD data imported "as is";
maximum no of levels=10,000; no subsampling.

-- Spreadsheet and .o4x import and export formats now support
up to 10,000 levels for CTD data.

-- WOCE, SD2 and spreadsheet data files may now have UNIX or MAC
end-of-line codes (conversion to DOS (if necessary) is done by ODV).

-- Pressure-to-depth conversion for .o4x and spreadsheet imports now
   using saunders and fofonoff's method (deep-sea res., 1976,23,109-111;
formula refitted for 1980 equation of state).

-- WOCE collections now store cast and sample numbers by default.

-- Station selection criteria now specify lon/lat ranges of the valid
domain (a station must lie in this domain to be considered
valid). By default the valid domain is identical with the map
domain, but it may be redefined to any sub-domain of the map using
the "Domain" tab of the "Selection Criteria" option.

-- Extended annotation support.

-- Lines two and three of text-window can be dragged horizontally.

-- Bounding box information in PostScript files now at top of the file
   and more accurate.

-- More accelerator keys added.
